I’m a gamer, what more can I say! To be specific, I love games that sharpen the mind. There’s something about it… the thrill, the mental gymnastics, the competition… it’s amazing. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re locked into a fierce battle. Chess was one of the first strategy games that was introduced to me by my beloved mother when I was about 12 years old. To this day I can still remember being amazed by all the different pieces, each having their own unique movements and functions.
The chessboard we used was made in Poland and handcrafted from the finest wood.
It had a distinct pleasant fragrant scent that it carries even to this day. I don’t know what was more exciting, learning something new or playing games with my mom. This wasn’t your average starter chessboard so I knew this was a privilege. Fast forward to today and I have carried on the tradition by introducing chess to my 6 year old son LaPharaoh.
It’s actually funny how it all came to pass.
Hannah sends me into this Toys R Us store near us which was going out of business, they were advertising 40% off the entire store so I went in to check it out. First off, absolutely NOTHING was 40% off (sighs) but i did see a Chess Teacher Set (Chess Set Here) that was specifically for introducing the game of Chess to little ones. I snatched it up and here we are embarking on a new journey together, into the world of Chess.
Chess is a phenomenal game for many reasons, one of my personal favorites is how the game can be used to convey meaningful messages about life, this alone can set the stage for deeper levels on understanding.
So the goal here with this blog series is to document Our Trippy Tribe’s exploration into the game of Chess, to see just what we can discover from this mysterious and fascinating game.
We hope you follow us (and our chess board) on this journey and we would love to hear what you enjoy the most about the game of chess. Do you have any stories about how and when you were introduced to the game of Chess? Share them below!
